چکیده

The first North American full scale post aerobic digester (PAD) is successfully operating at the Spokane County Regional Water Reclamation Facility (SCRWRF). The SCRWRF PAD has demonstrated ammonia removals of 90% or above without alkalinity or supplemental carbon addition. When operational controls were optimized for total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal, the SCRWRF PAD demonstrated effluent TIN removals of greater than 95%. Data from the SCRWRF PAD also demonstrated an additional 30%-40% volatile solids reduction (VSR) beyond typical anaerobic digester VSR of over 60%, resulting in a total VSR of at least 80% in the SCRWRF digestion system. The main operational challenge experienced was temperature buildup due to significant biological heat. Proper automation and controls are critical to maintain proper operation.

Analysis of Nutrient Removal using Membrane Thickening Aerobic Digestion

There are several long term water quality issues associated with discharging nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus into receiving water streams that are very difficult to manage. Due to these concerns many environmental regulatory agencies have either established nutrient discharge criteria or in the process of developing nutrient management plans. If a wastewater treatment plant is r...

Post-aerobic digestion of waste sludge: performance analysis and modelling of nitrogen fate under alternating aeration

Combined anaerobic–aerobic sludge digestion has been demonstrated as a valid technological solution to improve the sludge stabilization process, in terms of solid reduction and sludge dewaterability properties. In this study, we investigated the fate of all nitrogen species (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates) in the sequential digestion process when the post-aerobic step is operated with intermittent...

Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion of Activated Sludge; Reduction of Solids and Pathogenic Microorganisms

In the temperature range of 10 to 80 ºC and in a batch digester, a typical activated sludge was digested aerobically. Reaction rate constants were determined by measuring the amounts of volatiles removed from the suspended solids at different time intervals during the process. The maximum value of the reaction rate constant (0.45 d-1) occurred in the temperature...

VERTADTM – AUTO-THERMOPHILIC AEROBIC DIGESTION: DEMONSTRATION-SCALE TEST RESULTS by Jeff Guild, NORAM Engineering and Constructors Ltd.*

VERTADTM is an auto-thermophilic aerobic digestion process, employing a subsurface vertical reactor to aerobically digest mixed primary and secondary wastewater treatment solids. High metabolic activity results in heat generation, which enables the production of Class A Biosolids at short solids retention times (SRT). Currently the Technology Assessment Program of the King County Wastewater Tre...

Comment on "Estrogen receptor agonist fate during wastewater and biosolids treatment processes: a mass balance analysis".

The estrogen receptor agonist fate of hexane extracts from various locations and phases (liquid and solid) within one pilot-scale and two full-scale wastewater treatment facilities were examined by use of the receptor-binding yeast estrogen screen (YES assay). Estrogenic activity was found in samples that contained a high concentration of biological solids and was particularly high in the suspe...
